Mukesh D. Ambani

Mukesh D. Ambani (born April 19, 1957, Aden, Yemen) is an Indian business who serves as Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has profoundly shaped the business landscape with his visionary leadership. Educated as a chemical engineer at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai and later earning an MBA from Stanford University, Ambani has been a pivotal figure at Reliance since joining its board in 1977.

Under his stewardship, Reliance transformed from a textile company into a global powerhouse in petrochemicals and refining. Ambani's bold move into backward integration revolutionized the company’s operations, expanding its capacity from under one million tonnes to a staggering 21 million tonnes annually.

In the late 1990s, Ambani spearheaded the creation of Jamnagar, the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery, with a capacity of 660,000 barrels per day. This ambitious project, which also incorporated petrochemicals, power generation, and port infrastructure, set a new benchmark in the global refining industry. Not stopping there, he later added another refinery with a 580,000-barrels-per-day capacity, making Jamnagar a global refining hub with an aggregate capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day.

Ambani’s vision extends beyond refining. He has been instrumental in establishing Reliance Retail as India’s largest organized retail network and created Jio, one of the world’s largest 4G broadband networks. His leadership in Jio has set global records for customer acquisition and transformed digital services across India, impacting sectors like education, healthcare, security, and entertainment.

In addition to his business achievements, Mukesh Ambani is actively involved in several global and national forums. He is a member of the World Economic Forum's Foundation Board, the United States National Academy of Engineering, and the Global Advisory Council of Bank of America. His affiliations also include the International Advisory Council of The Brookings Institution and various other prestigious advisory councils, reflecting his influence and contributions to both industry and society. He also chairs the Board of Governors for Pandit Deendayal Energy University, showcasing his commitment to advancing education in energy and beyond.
